hal: single joint EXOSKELETON

Targeted support to build independence and reach your goals

HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) Single Joint Type is the newest exoskeleton available for use during your session at RoboFit. Building on the ground-breaking technology used in the HAL Lower Limb Type, the Single Joint Type is a compact exoskeleton providing targeted assistance to specific areas of the body, such as the elbow, ankle or knee.

Similar to its larger sibling, the Single Joint device reads the wearer’s bioelectric signals, interpreting the wearer’s movement intention and working with them to complete movements. This process encourages the development of new neural pathways, improving motor and sensory function in some cases.

Who is the Single Joint Type for?

As with the larger device, HAL Single Joint Type is primarily designed to rehabilitate individuals currently living with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions such as Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis or Spinal Cord Injury.

This device is able to be completely tailored to the individual wearer’s ability levels, meaning that each wearer will have a completely personalised rehabilitation experience.

RoboFit’s team use real-time data from the Single Joint device to create a therapy program best suited to your circumstances and goals.

targeted support, where you need it

Portable, targeted, and agile

Wearing the HAL exoskeleton leads to a fusion of “man”, “robot” and “information”. HAL assists a physically challenged person to move, enabling him or her to perform more motions and exert more strength than previously possible.

The Single Joint Type has a range of benefits over its larger sibling, including:

  • Intensive training of single joints (knee, elbow etc.)
  • More portable design, allowing the RoboFit team to come to you
  • More flexible use conditions (seated, laying down, standing)
SingleJoint
First, you go to perform movement. When this happens, your brain sends signals to the desired muscle group to tell it to act.
Receiving the signals, the muscles attempt to move. In a healthy body, this would be where the muscle acts with the intended strength and speed.
Using electrodes, HAL reads the bioelectric signals sent by the brain and determines what movement the wearer intends to perform.

In accordance with the recognised motions, HAL distributes power to the exoskeleton, providing the wearer with the required assistance to complete the action as normal.

Performing the motions with HAL stimulates neuroplasticity, developing new neural pathways and improving long term motor function.
