Spinal cord injury awareness week: Lucy's story

Rebuilding Movement, Regaining Independence

Spinal cord injuries change lives instantly. At RoboFit, we help people take the next step, literally and figuratively. Our approach combines personalised physiotherapy, exercise programs, and innovative robotic technology to support recovery at every stage.

This Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week, we’re proud to share Lucy’s journey: from a life-changing injury to walking independently with a walker. Her story highlights how having access to the right supports, technology, and rehabilitation services can open doors to progress that might otherwise feel out of reach.

Keep reading below to watch Lucy share her story.

LUCY’S STORY: FROM A SINGLE FINGER TO WALKING AGAIN

On the 3rd of May 2023, Lucy fainted in the bathroom and broke her neck. At first, she could barely move a finger. Every day presented new challenges, from simple tasks to regaining control over her body.

Through consistent therapy at Prince of Wales Hospital, ongoing support at Shellharbour Private Rehab, and a combination of personalised physiotherapy and HAL-assisted sessions at RoboFit, Lucy gradually rebuilt strength, coordination, and confidence. Today, she walks independently with a walker. Her progress demonstrates the impact that timely access to skilled care and advanced rehabilitation can have on recovery, turning what once seemed impossible into reality.

“I never imagined I could walk again, but step by step, session by session, it became possible.” Lucy

How We Support Spinal Cord Injury Recovery

Recovery is different for everyone. RoboFit’s team designs programs tailored to your abilities, goals, and stage of rehabilitation. What is common is the person centred approach we take to ensure from our initial consultation our team is focused on your goals and journey.

Physiotherapy Focus:

  • Improving movement and muscle control
  • Relearning walking patterns and balance
  • Reducing spasticity and stiffness
  • Enhancing joint mobility

Exercise Physiology Focus:

  • Strength and endurance training
  • Rebuilding functional movement
  • Energy management and pacing
  • Supporting long-term independence

HAL Exoskeleton:

    • HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) helps your brain and body reconnect
    • Encourages neuroplasticity through guided, repetitive movements
    • Enables practice even when strength is limited

Lucy’s Recovery in Action

Lucy’s story is a journey of possibility. When Lucy started coming to RoboFit her program started with a clinical team that listened, assessed her functional goals, and designed a spinal cord injury therapy program that combined physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and neuro-controlled technology to accelerate her progress.

Each step, each session, was tailored to Lucy’s goals, showing how the right combination of care, support, and technology can create real opportunities for recovery at any stage.
